Masses of raw wool from across Europe would be unloaded from boats along the river and collected into piles. Then it would be washed in the river before being sorted by quality. Finally, it would be hung up to dry before being taken away to be dyed, combed, spun and woven.
Finished cloth would be stretched and dried in sheds by the river, before it was
collected by boat and transported out of Florence to be sold for expensive clothing. The
city made a lot of its wealth from using the river Arno and became famous for its high-quality goods.
