Exiting the walls of the city, Tom followed dusty paw prints to a beautiful vineyard, surrounded by hills and villas. A crowd had gathered around a man with a strange-looking machine.
The hills around Florence were filled with farms and . Rich families used the villas that they built as an escape from the city, but they also hired farmers to take care of their land. In the late summer, workers collected olives from trees,
fields, and vines to use the grapes to make wine. When the harvest was bad, farm workers moved to the city centre to find new jobs.
As the man was preparing to test his invention, Tom heard a distant meow. He headed in the direction of the sound.
