“Well, at least she’s found something nice to eat,” said Mrs Cherry, smiling. “Now, let’s move this makeshift hutch into one corner so that my wheelbarrow and other things will fit inside the shed too.”
Bea and the gardener had just finished moving things around the shed, when they heard a loud gasp. Mr Darou, the palace chef, was hurrying towards them with a horrified look on his face. “Get off, you horrible creature!” He flapped his white chef’s hat at the bunny. “Get away from those carrots.”
“It’s all right!” called Mrs Cherry. “Princess Bea rescued the little rabbit and we’re just sorting somewhere to keep her.”
Darou took no notice. “Look at that – it’s nibbled every single one. Shoo, you nasty thing!” Flapping his hat in the air, he dashed across the vegetable plot and trampled some of the bean shoots.
Goldie pricked up her ears and quickly hopped away. Hiding behind a row of tomato plants, she peeped out timidly.
Bea hurried out of the shed. She wished the chef would stop shouting and flapping his hat around. “It’s all right – I’ll catch her. She’s quite a nervous rabbit so if you keep on doing that she might run off.”
“This is terrible!” Darou stormed. “I promised the king I would make carrot soup for dinner as it’s his favourite. Now that creature has spoiled everything!”
“I have some lovely leeks and potatoes that would make a nice soup,” offered Mrs Cherry, but the chef only grew crosser.
“I simply cannot cook with animals galloping around and chewing everything!” He kicked out at the vegetable plot, sending clods of earth flying into the air.
