A large lump of soil landed right next to Goldie. The rabbit jumped in fright, her little white tail flashing as she ran to the edge of the vegetable garden. She squeezed under the wire fence and made off across the palace lawn.
Mrs Cherry put a hand on Bea’s arm, murmuring, “You go and catch her, Princess Bea. I’ll calm Mr Darou down and see if I can send him back to the kitchen.”
Bea raced after the little bunny. Goldie dived into the middle of some lilies and hid there, camouflaged among the bright-yellow and white flowers. Bea spotted the tall lily stems quivering.
“I’m sorry, Goldie!” She knelt down on the earth and held out her hand. “I know Chef Darou seems scary but I can keep you safe if you trust me.”
Goldie sniffed her fingers, just like she had when Bea had discovered her in the bush.
“Come and try the new hutch we made for you,” Bea continued. “You must be so tired after all this running around.”
Goldie eyed her cautiously. Then she hopped out of her hiding place and twitched her nose. Bea smiled as she stroked the rabbit’s soft ears. Goldie must really trust her to come out of hiding so quickly!
“Everything will be fine, you’ll see!” Bea lifted the rabbit into her arms. “I’ll make your hutch really comfortable and bring you some lovely things to eat.” She carried Goldie back to the shed. Luckily there was no sign of the royal chef.
Bea gently put Goldie inside the homemade hutch and laid some straw across the floor inside. Then she fastened the last corner of the roof sacking and left a saucer of water for the bunny to drink. Finally, she pushed a few leafy carrot tops through the gaps in the
