“No, you can’t!” said Bea. “Keira and I found her so we’re the ones looking after her.”
“That’s not fair!” Her brother turned bright red. “Why do you get to do anything you like? I’m telling Dad!” He ran off across the lawn.
“Maybe we should have let him help a bit,” suggested Keira.
Bea sighed. “I’ll let him help tomorrow. Shall we get Goldie out the hutch for a while?”
The girls took the rabbit out of the pen and took turns stroking her. Bea was just about to return the little rabbit to the shed when King George came striding across the lawn.
“Beatrice, where did you get that rabbit from?” he said sternly. “Please tell me you haven’t brought a wild animal home.”
Bea explained that they’d found Goldie near the corner shop and that Mrs Rinberg had put a sign in the shop window asking if anyone had lost a pet rabbit. Then she showed her father Goldie’s homemade hutch.
“I know it’s not as good as a proper hutch but I think Goldie will be happy here for a few days,” she added.
Keira brought the bunny closer and the king’s face softened as he patted Goldie’s fur. “I think you’ve been very sensible about this, girls. When Alfred came to me with a tale about a rabbit on the loose I expected the worst, but I think a temporary hutch in the garden is an excellent idea ... and you’ve already taken steps to find the animal’s owner too.”
Bea smiled widely. “Thanks, Dad! She’s such a sweet rabbit. I really couldn’t leave her all alone in Savara.”
