“Yes, well... Obviously it would be too much to ask you not to bring animals back to the palace altogether!” King George raised his eyebrows at Bea.
“We could run down the hill and see if anyone’s asked Mrs Rinberg about Goldie,” Keira said. “You never know, Bea – someone might have seen the note in the window already!”
“That’s a good idea!” said Bea. “Is that all right, Dad?”
The king nodded. “Just make sure you’re back in time for dinner.”
Bea and Keira hurried out of the palace gate. The breeze ruffled their hair as they raced down the hill. They slowed down as they reached the row of shops beside the harbour. The street was quieter than it had been that morning. The sun had turned a beautiful burnt orange as it sank towards the sea.
“There’s the notice!” Bea pointed to a piece of paper stuck on the window of the corner shop. It read LOST RABBIT in big capital letters. “Let’s find out if anyone’s asked about Goldie.”
“Bea, wait!” Keira grabbed her friend’s arm. “Look at the rest of the note.”
Bea hastily scanned what Mrs Rinberg had written. Something halfway down caught her eye ... so if you are missing a toy rabbit with golden fur, come and speak to me to find out who is looking after him.
Bea sucked in her breath. “A TOY rabbit! But Goldie isn’t a toy.”
“There’s been a mix-up.” Keira pulled a face. “I’m sure I told Mrs Rinberg that Goldie was a real rabbit but she was busy with a whole queue of customers so maybe she didn’t listen very carefully.”
