Hydra, the water snake, can be seen from January through to May, but it is at its highest point in the sky in April. It seems to suit the rainy month of April rather well to have a water snake as the constellation of the month!
The story behind Hydra comes from the Greek myths. One day the
sun god, Apollo, sent a crow to fetch him a cup of water. When the mischievous crow came back, he gave Apollo a cup with a water snake in it instead! Apollo was so angry that he threw the snake and the crow into the sky and they became constellations of stars.
There is another Greek myth that has a monster in it called Hydra. This was a monster with many heads which the brave and strong hero Heracles had to kill.
