There would also have been several bedrooms and an office, as well as
a walled courtyard garden called a peristylium where the family could relax in the sunshine surrounded by plants, sculptures and fountains.

Rich Romans would also have had a kitchen, although they wouldn’t even make
a cHeEsE sAnDWIcH themselves as they had slaves to do all the housework, gardening and cooking. If you fancied a parrot tongue kebab, all you had to do was holler!
Amazingly, some rich people’s homes had a kind of fancy-pants underfloor heating called hypocaust, where the floor was raised up on pillars so warm air could flow underneath. They even had access to sewers and running water. That’s five-star living right there!

If you were to search the archaeological remains of a Roman domus or villa looking for the slaves' room, you'd find it hard. Slaves often slept in the DOORWAY of their master's bedroom! So if you think your room is small, count yourself lucky that you HAVE a bedroom.
