So what would the inside of a rich Roman,s home look like? Let,s step inside this domus — or town house — and see . . .
The front door usually opened into a central hall or atrium which had an open roof and a pool in the middle of the floor. Paddling in it with sMeLlY fEeT was generally frowned upon.
Most homes had their own shrine called a lararium, where household gods called lares were worshipped. This was a sacred place where the family made offerings. The family could choose any gods to worship, although two favourites were Vesta, the goddess of the home, and Janus, the god of doors and time, which sounds like he got a bit of a poor deal when the god jobs were being handed out . . .

Some well-off Romans would have also had their own bathrooms or lavatrina with built-in toilets and a pool or basin to wash in, however many people still went to the public bath houses to wash. Imagine not having a shower at home and popping to the swimming baths with a bar of soap instead. Embarrassing or what?
