Well if you think you’ve got it bad, the main way that teachers in ancient Rome used to discipline their students was using fEaR and vIoLeNcE.

The ancient Romans believed that boys would only learn accurately and correctly if they were TeRrIfIeD of being caned if they got things wrong. For boys who got things wrong A LoT, some schools would even bring in two slaves to hold the boys down while the teacher beat them with a leather whip! oUcH! It’s enough to make your bottom jump off and run away and hide!
Even worse, boys had to go to school SeVeN dAyS A WEeK. No weekends! No lie-ins. Nothing. Although luckily, there were a lot of religious holidays, and students got some time off in the summer when the weather was hot. Still, SeVeN days a week of school, eh? It’s just as well that idea didn’t catch on!
