The Romans were big on public health – but more when it came to keeping things clean. They understood that having sewers to take away the sMeLlY StUfF and clean water to drink would improve people’s wellbeing. But they weren’t so bothered about medicine itself, preferring to use herbal remedies for illnesses instead.
The Greeks had developed many ideas about medicine, but the Romans didn’t advance them, even when they took over Greece and Greek doctors came to Rome (often as slaves).

The Greek doctor Archagathus was the first medic to come to Rome. At first people thought he was great, but then his way with a BlAdE earned him the nickname “The Executioner”!
 FANCY THAT!
Life was short in those days and for much of the population life expectancy wasn't much beyond 25 years old. War killed many men and childbirth killed many women. However, in one census some claimed to be as old as 140! Either they couldn't count or they were very WRINKLY FIBBERS!
