Of course, not everyone was a fan of loud, ROUGH-AND-TUMBLE sports. Some preferred quieter pursuits.
Swimming in the River Tiber was one of the favourite activities of Roman children, and boys also enjoyed learning to ride horses – though not at the same time. Swimming while riding a horse is NoT to be encouraged – especially at your local public pool.
Hey! What's that horse doing in the water?
Front crawl, I think.
FANCY THAT!
Ancient Roman ball games played outside could be dangerous. One legal case recorded how a barber was shaving a man's neck with
a razor when he was hit by a ball . . . with EXTREMELY bloody results. That would have been one AAAWKWAAARD request to get the ball back!
Roman children were also keen on flying kites, ball games, playing at being soldiers or gladiators with wooden swords, rolling hoops made from pieces of metal, playing with toy chariots or centaurs with wheels that were pulled along on a string or with a stick, and playing with dolls.
So nothing much has changed in thousands of years. Apart from the metal hoop thing. The Romans can keep that, thanks.
