If you can get to a canal, river, lake or pond, this is a great way to spend a summer afternoon, whatever the weather. In fact, minibeasts are sometimes easier to find on a rainy day, so if it’s a typical wet and windy British summer day, just wrap up in your
waterproofs, pull on a pair of wellies and get outside for some minibeast fun!
You will need:
Fishing net
Bucket
Magnifying glass (optional) This book!
You’ll need an adult to help you with this activity if
you are near deep water.
First of all, you need to fill your bucket with some water from the river, canal, lake or pond that you are visiting. Then put your net into the river and drag it back and forth gently. Once you have picked up a few minibeasts, tip them quickly and carefully into your bucket.
Now follow this guide to see what you might have found:
Has it got a shell? It might be:
Nerite snail Ramshorn snail
Bivalve mollusc Wandering pond snail
