L. M. MONTGOMERY (1874–1942)
October leads us gently into autumn. The days are still mild and the light is golden as it reflects off the turning leaves. The colours are glorious! This is the perfect time of year to go out walking in the countryside and parks. Run through the fallen leaves and look out for especially beautiful colours and shapes. Maybe you could collect your favourite leaves and press them? Pressed autumn leaves make brilliant decorations on cards or bookmarks.
Every October, servants and farm labourers used to go to the centre of their town or village to look for work, carrying something to show what job they did. Maids would carry a small mop, and so these gatherings became known as mop fairs. Nowadays, mop fairs are funfairs.
