Windrush Day is on 22nd June. On this day in 1948, 1,027 people finally arrived in Britain after making the long journey, thousands of miles across the Atlantic, from the Caribbean on a ship called the Empire Windrush. They came because the British government had advertised jobs for them in Britain.
Lots of young men and women from the Caribbean had served in
the British army, navy and air force during the Second World War. When the war ended, they were keen to come to Britain to help rebuild the cities after bombs had destroyed so much of the country. This was the first time so many people had come to Britain from
the Caribbean, and many more came in the years that followed, to live with their families and to work here.
