Malala Yousafzai
Malala Yousafzai and two of her friends were shot on a bus by a Taliban gunman on 9 October 2012 in retaliation for their activism around education for girls in Pakistan. She had been writing an anonymous blog since she was eleven, and had appeared in an American documentary and been interviewed in print and on television. She was fifteen when she was wounded.
The speech from which the words above are extracted was given less than a year later, on her sixteenth birthday, and gave rise to a movement for universal education. At seventeen, Malala became the youngest-ever recipient of a Nobel Prize for Peace.
