Our communities have been deeply enhanced
by immigration, be it of Irish Catholics across the constituency or of Muslims from Gujarat in India or from Pakistan, principally from Kashmir. While we celebrate our diversity, what surprises me time and time again as I travel around the constituency is that we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.
Jo Cox
Jo Cox (1974 – 2016), who was elected to parliament in 2015, gave her first speech in the House of Commons Chamber on 3 June 2015. On 16 June 2016, she died after being shot and stabbed multiple times outside the library in Birstall, near Leeds, where she was about to meet constituents. Her killer is in prison for life.
Jo’s words gave rise to the More in Common movement, to bring communities together with street parties, gatherings, events and campaigns. Jo’s beliefs gave us all something, even after her death. Her killer did nothing but take away.
