If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.
Desmond Tutu
Desmond Tutu, the South African cleric, human rights activist and anti-apartheid campaigner who was the first Black African to hold the position of Archbishop of Cape Town, puts his point about injustice very clearly here, which makes it seem simple. But it is hard to act on. Staying out of it is easier. It is also damaging. Be brave and free the mouse.
Neutrality can be a good thing, but only if we use it actively to make both sides safe, and to make peace between them. Involvement matters.
