I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.
Isaac Newton
I like this idea, from Isaac Newton (1643 – 1727), the English mathematician and astronomer who formulated the laws of motion and gravity, not just because it reminds us that there are always plenty of pretty shells to be found in the great ocean of truth. But also because it reveals that we often achieve the most while doing what feels like play to us. Newton, one of the most important scientists of all time, made great discoveries by “diverting himself”.
Do what you enjoy, and fill your life with it. The more you do it, the more you will enjoy it.
