Laura Bates invited women and men to offer their experience of discrimination, harassment and assault on a website, and found 50,000 instances were posted in the first eighteen months. She herself became the target of appalling aggression online, including rape threats. She has since worked with the police and other authorities to use the patterns revealed by her data to help to deter and prosecute perpetrators.
