SYNOPSIS
after the old woman. Or are they looking after her? Evaline, the housekeeper who has been with the family for so long no one remembers when she moved in, has a different opinion.
When Raphael and Cassie go to visit Frau Fischer, an old woman who lives in a rundown house in the middle of the Black Forest with her goat, Olga, they learn that she is the one who found Raphael and intended to bring him up as her own. But the residents of Edenburg did not think she was
a fit mother and took him away from her. She is delighted
to see him again and tells him everything she can about his arrival in the forest. But she is not well, and birds are gathering around her house, so Cassie convinces Crunch and Grind to visit and they take her back to town to be looked after.
While they are carrying her through the forest, Olga the goat escapes and Cassie is forced to chase her through the forest to the ruins of the castle surrounded by dense trees. There they find a gathering of the Schwartzwolken, and are forced to flee for their lives. Then comes a huge and deadly attack on the house as the birds get in through the open roof, and Cassie’s father is forced to use bellows filled with arsenic to kill the leader of the Schwartzwolken. The birds are defeated and the angel can rise safely at last. Though there’s a last-minute twist, and it’s not Raphael who leaves, but Cassie’s mother. . .
