As if that extra physical work wasn’t enough, the teachers thought up some SuPeR-FuN IdEaS to make sure the kids always had happy smiles on their faces . . . NoT! Pupils would have to go to deserted places at night oN ThEiR OwN to prick themselves with cactus spines (called a ‘penance’) and offer incense.
I suppose I´d better get it over with . . .
Still not having enough of a giggle? Well, boys were also woken at mIdNiGhT to pray and take a cOlD bAtH.
Calmecac meant ‘House of Tears’, and you can see why, but a more accurate title would have been ‘House of Screaming and Shouting “Please Stop Making Me Take Ice Cold Baths in the Middle of the Night”.’
The only thing that could make this any worse is if I had to prick myself with cactus spines.
