Just like today, not all Aztecs ate the same kinds of food. If you,re a king or a queen nowadays, you probably don,t have mac and cheese or chicken nuggets and beans quite as often as the rest of us.
So it probably won’t come as a surprise to learn that the super-rich didn’t have to chow down on tadpoles to supplement their diet – unless they were mEgA- WeIrDoS who loved that unmistakable tadpoley taste.
While the poor could very rarely afford meat, the big cheeses down Tenochtitlán way loved nothing more than munching on the likes of deer, rabbits, armadillos, opossums and even iguanas! They were also big fans of birds (nibbling them,
that is) and ate more than 30 different species, from turkeys and ducks to pigeons and pelicans. The rich were particularly fond of quails – though we’re guessing quail weren’t particularly fond of the rich.

Among other things the wealthy drank was HoT ChOcOlAtE! It was made from the crushed and boiled beans of the cacao tree, flavoured with honey or vanilla. If they wanted it nice and frothy it was poured from a great height. They even had straws made of gOlD to drink it through.
