As was very common around the world in those days, the Aztecs thought some illnesses were the work of EVIL SPIRITS.
One of the ways they tried to get rid of them was to put patients in mud brick steam houses and make offerings of copal (a type of aromatic tree resin) while they sweated out the bad gHoStIeS. Almost all homes had a steam bath house next to it – they looked a bit like igloos and were similar to saunas. A fire outside heated the walls of the building, and when water was thrown on them hot steam was created. Sounds a bit sweaty!
 Result!
Phew! I am OUTTA there. Sooooo hot!
Cough! Splutter!
That´s what you get for putting skunk spray in my hot chocolate!
It was also believed in some cases that when you were sick you were being pUnIsHeD by the gods for your sins. So, if you blame your dog for a bottom burp and the next day you get a sore throat, now you know why!
Obviously being sprayed with SkUnK JuIcE or set on fire didn’t always have the desired effect, and sometimes both adults and kids ended up on the wrong side of dead after an injury, accident or illness. Let’s just say what happened next wasn’t exactly straightforward, or necessarily a lot of fun.
