The Hall of Preserving Harmony
was the most beautifully decorated
building in the Forbidden City. During banquets, guests ate expensive foods like goose, lamb and chicken with rice, which was rare in Beijing because rice mainly grew in southern China. Tea was a favourite
drink, sipped from delicate porcelain bowls.
Tom followed the people towards an amazing building. Inside, a grand was taking place and an important-looking man in a yellow gown sat in a grand throne.
Just then, Tom spotted Digby sneaking off with a piece of someone’s dinner!
During banquets, the court
played music. The orchestra played a variety of instruments,
including the , harp, flute and drum. They were joined by dancers.
