Porcelain was expensive to make.The kilns had to be heated up to a very high temperature and hundreds of workers were needed to do all the different jobs, from making and painting the porcelain to packing and transporting it overseas.
During the Ming era, potters developed new ways to make the porcelain as thin and shiny as possible. This meant it was very fragile.
Lots of porcelain was sold to Europe, where it was extremely popular. Factories in England even started producing their own porcelain in the Chinese style.
