Many people lived outside of the city and made a living working in the fields, growing millet, hemp and wheat. They used cattle or
to plough the soil and a variety of machines to water the land.
Farmers usually wore loose clothes made from hemp, which were cheaper and more practical than the clothes the rich wore.
