Woodpecker
There are more great-spotted woodpeckers than any other woodpecker in Europe and you can find them all year round in parks and woodland across the continent. They have black and white bodies with a pointy tail and beak, and a striking red patch underneath their tail. Male great-spotted woodpeckers also have
a red patch on the back of their neck.
Using their beak to quickly drum or ‘peck’ against wood is how the woodpecker got its name. They are able to drill holes in trees to nest in, and they can also use this fast beak movement to uncover and eat insects that are hiding under a tree’s bark.
