Page 3 - SAMPLE Petunia Perry and the Curse of the Ugly Pigeon
P. 3

It’s hard fitting in at secondary school, when no one cares about the important things any more like how far you can tip back on a chair before cracking your head open, or who can eat the blackest, most rancid banana. But Petunia intends to try, which is why she stages a flashmob dance performance in the canteen, but instead of earning her loads of new friends, she in fact alienates everyone even further.
At the same lunchtime, she also manages to spit tuna sandwich over the boy she likes. Once she’s reunited with Cammy (aka Camembert), they decide to start a band in the hope of gaining acceptance.
After a series of hilarious auditions, the band comes together, but it’s not complete until Petunia and Cammy enlist Petunia’s cat, Margaret, as lead singer. This they do with great skill and by tempting her with the orange dust that is left behind in an empty bag of cheese puffs. They even raise some money for a gig, but disaster strikes when Cammy, meaning well, spends it all on personalised socks for the band members.
By the time all the chaos is over, Cammy and Petunia realise that growing up is not about being accepted into the mainstream but about staying true to yourself and just carrying on with the crazy.
