The lamps were all extinguished on the deck, except one on the corner. It was dark, and the air was thick and wet. It was much less good than it had been the first time; much more tricky. But she had made up her mind.
Isobel went along cautiously, one arm against the wall. She would go along by the wall, away from the door, until she was opposite the platform. And then cross the deck quickly to get to the railing. Yes, that was all right. She could keep her grip up here. She wanted to see through the telescope.
She sidled along, looking mostly at her own feet. But as she turned her face to the platform and stepped away from the wall, something stopped her in her tracks.
There was somebody already there.
Two somebodies. Two dark figures. Two dark figures on the platform by the telescope. One of them had a lantern – a bright, flickering yellow light. Even by that light she could see neither of their faces.
They were saying something Isobel couldn’t hear over the waves.
She held her breath.
She heard, clearly between a gap in the waves, one say to the other, “No, what?”
The other said, “It won’t do, you know!”
