                And then the ship pitched. One figure stooped, and suddenly, as Isobel watched, this first figure tipped the other over the railing, and into the darkness of the endless sea.
They seemed to fall for a long time. There was no splash, or if there was it was lost in the waves. Isobel was frozen to the spot for a moment – and then her common sense caught up with her, and she stepped back quickly into the shadows.
And to her horror her elbow bumped against something – something warm – something warm and soft and alive – and she heard a sharp intake of breath. She was not alone. There was somebody else in the shadows, too.
“Shhh,” hissed the somebody else, through gritted teeth, and Isobel realised it was a boy of about her own height. He put his hand on her arm. “Stay still and we might just—”
But the figure at the railings was turning towards them, lantern in hand. There was no time to think. They had no time to wait. Any second he would see them. There was no way of getting back to the door in time, and besides, he could easily follow them down into the corridor – and then there would be nowhere else to run
but their own cabins. There was nothing they could do
