      Laying of the Barnsley Museums Poppy Wreath

During Barnsley schools’ half term week, visitors to Experience Barnsley will be
invited to create button poppies which will form a larger wreath. On behalf of Barnsley Museums’ visitors and supporters, the wreath will be placed at the War Memorial during the children’s remembrance service.

The Great War Trilogy Lectures with Paul Reed
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, historian Paul Reed will deliver a unique trilogy of lectures at Experience Barnsley, peppered with local stories and legacies of war.
Paul Reed is a leading WW1 expert, appearing or consulting on TV shows such as BBCs Timewatch, Meet the Ancestors, Andrew Marr’s History of Great Britain as well as Who Do You Think You Are?
He has published seven books on the subject, including the critically acclaimed Great War Lives and Walking the Somme.
Part 1: The Great War

Examine the causes and the course of the First World War from a British and Commonwealth perspective, including fascinating stories of the Pals battalions, the forgotten territorial soldiers, and the experience of Commonwealth and black soldiers.
Part 2: The Legacies of the First World War
Saturday 24 November 11am - 1pm
Beyond the battlefields, explore wider legacies of war, including the experience of women during this period and the impact on local communities.
Part 3: Researching Your Ancestors and Object Handling
Saturday 1 December
11am - 1pm
In this practical lecture look into how you can trace your own ancestors, the soldiers on your local war memorial or even the soldier who lived in your house! There will also be some original objects to handle, bringing this vivid history into your own hands.
This fascinating course is not to be missed if you want to know how the war changed Barnsley and the whole world forever.
