John made many photo albums, including one about his cycling trip around Europe. The first and last entries are reprinted here:
The Grand Tour of the Continent (July - Sept ’56)
Visiting especially Venice, Florence and Rome - by Pedal Unassisted Steam Bicycle by John Walsh
Starting on July 4th, still a little Schools battered, and starry-eyed, we met where the A137 & B1352 do. Crossing on the night-boatfrom Harwich, we were dumped, tongue tied in the damp gloomy cold of the Hook of Holland. By the time we reached Rotterdam, we looked so at home as to be asked the way by several people. Soon after, at Delft, I was self-assured enough to produce a camera, which thereafter reflects our sights, weathers and moods!
Final entry:
Recrossed the Channelfrom Dieppe - whipped onto the boat at the last minute - no time to even collect my beloved Bonbel. Arrived at Newhaven, my first act was to consume 2 fried eggs, chips, bacon, tomatoes and sausages to the tune of4 shillings at a transport cafe! Satisfied, I spent the night at Blackboys Y.H. playing monopoly and becoming anglicised again. Headedfor home, stopping only to call on an unrecognising Jack Harley, to arrive home on Sept 7th, unexpected, after 9 weeks at a total cost of £46.
N.B The beard lasted a week only, each day portions disappearing to see if it looked better, till it was all gone, so it's a good thing I have the photographic evidence.
