John was a principled, honest, caring and thoughtful man.
Here are the thoughts of Brenda, the person who knew him best, on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary party in 2012 (pictured).
When I first met John, I was a bit in awe of him. We were in the same
boarding house and he was ENGLISH. Up to then my boyfriends had been Scottish. Also, he had a first class degree from Oxford and that seemed very posh to me. As I gradually got to know him he turned out to be human, despite the aforesaid handicaps.
I can't believe I've been so lucky to have been married to John for 50 years.
It seems impossible for a start, as we're not old enough. The success of our marriage owes a lot to John, who has been so reliable and loving over the years.
He's always patient and I could count on one hand the number of times he's been angry or upset. He's so much more patient than I am and there seems to be no problem he can't solve or fix, from a tangled necklace to a washing machine, broken gadget or toy - after all, he has all the bits in the garage.
My only niggle is that he puts function before form, so his repairs work perfectly but don't look so good. But hey.
Our shared love of the outdoors, starting at the youth hostel at Kishorn and moving on to hillwalking, travel and gardening, have been a great joy to us, as has theatre and film.
We try not to let the sun go down on our disagreements and this has helped us make it to our golden day.
Our lovely family has made us happy and proud and we would like to thank all of your for everything - and lastly John, for the daily early morning cuppa.
