Set within three acres in Edinburgh’s leafy Southside, our school provides the internationally recognised Steiner/Waldorf curriculum, which is renowned for its innovative and holistic approach.
The first Waldorf school was created in 1919, and our teaching continues to be dedicated to the comprehensive and fully inclusive “art of education”. This encompasses each individual’s physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs. A century on, the curriculum has evolved and is just as relevant and forward-thinking as it was back then.
Our teachers educate the whole child. Each lesson is multilateral, focusing on their intellectual, artistic and emotional capacities, and building practical skills. From Early Years to Class 12, subject matter
is linked to the pupils’ developmental stage to both inspire and motivate them, while establishing curiosity, confidence and an understanding of their talents and skills.
Playgroup (aged 2+) and Kindergarten (from
age 3.5 to six years old) pupils enjoy activities embedded in the cycle of seasons, benefitting from an unhurried rhythm of daily life and integrated learning. The Lower School lays the foundations
for the intellectual thinking that is developed in the Upper School, where the curriculum accommodates each individual.
With an average class size of 20 and a teacher- pupil ratio of 1:8.5, each pupil is known well by their teachers, who are able to commit time to each child.
Edinburgh Steiner School truly is outward-looking and is part of a global network of more than 1,100 schools and 2,000 kindergartens across some 80
countries. Our own pupils learn two modern foreign languages from age six.
Neuroscientists urge that children need time and space to play. At the Waldorf 100 celebrations in Silicon Valley, Thomas Sudhof, a Nobel laureate in neuroscience and a Waldorf graduate, concluded his keynote speech by saying: “Nowadays, where things are changing, where the way we interact with the world has become so much more indirect because of new technologies, where we need to cope with a completely dierent sensory environment, this type of education is more important than ever.”
Our children learn in inspirational spaces, with C-listed buildings that are full of character as well as purpose-built architecture that enhances and inspires each child’s learning and development.
A Steiner education develops a life-long love of learning and skills for the 21st century, allowing
each pupil to progress into the next stage of their education with ambition, a broad understanding of the world and a readiness to take up a global career.
