How styles have kept pace with
the fashion stakes
When Meadowhall first opened in the early1990s, the fashion world was in a very
different place.
GAP and Levi 501s were among the hottest brand around and shoppers were kitted out in high-waisted jeans, designer slogan and logo tops and platform shoes.
Hair was still big - perms and highlights being cruelly combined as we moved from theheightof80sglamfashion to the more street-wise 90s.
Coming into their own in the charts were the likes of Oasis,HappyMondaysandAll Saintsanditwastheirmixof combat and grunge style that quickly translated on to the HighStreetandintoMeadow- hall stores.
We didn’t yet have the internet so fashion styles weren’t quite so quick to translate offthe catwalk in to the stores; nowadays cop ycat designs are hanging on the rails within 24 hours of the shows.
To make shopping even more accessible, Meadowhall was actually one of the first centres in the UK to pioneer Sunday trading, somethings that millions of shoppers every weekend now take for granted as the norm.
Back then life seemed a lot simpler, there wasn’t the frenetic need to update and the cheap and chic stores we all enjoy such as Primark weren’t household names.
Calvin Klein, Sweater Shop and NAF NAF were the leaders of the fashion pack back then.
Celebrity certainly wasn’t as big as it is now and reality TV was non-existent.
Thefashioniconswerethe likes of supermodels Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell.
Now 25 years on, the cen tre has enjoyed seen its fash- ionofferingexpandand diversify with the likes ofRe iss, TOPSHOP, All Saints and Urban outfitters leading the way.
Despite the seismic chang es we have seen in shopping habits over the last 25 vears.
