   We embarked on a journey
which began with a consultation with patients, their families, our staff and volunteers to develop a design that solved the problems the three-bedded bays presented.
The consultation highlighted what was important and the outcomes that the new bedrooms should provide:
More patients with the care and dignity they deserve
Having individual bedrooms means we will no longer be restricted by single- sex bays or the number of patients admitted due to infection control. That means we will be able to care for more patients at any given time. The new designs will also enable patients to access toilets and not have to queue or use a commode.
Privacy and precious family time
The new bedrooms will enable patients to talk in privacy without the worry of being overheard. They will be able to create special, precious memories without fear of disturbing other patients. They will also give families time to stay with their loved one for as long as they need after they die. This gives them the time they need to say goodbye and express their grief freely in a private space.
More space
The new bedrooms will give patients 142% more space than the bays. This means that family members will be able to sleep over night in the same room as their loved one. Patients will also have access to their own outdoor space to spend precious time with their families.
A home from home
Patients will be able to make the bedroom their own. They will have storage space to keep their clothes and other personal belongings close by. Patients will also have control over their own environment, such as heating and lighting, in a modern room. New piped oxygen will eliminate the use of gas cylinders, and integral hoists will replace mobile hoists, making it easier and safer for medical and nursing staff to care for patients.
