                                    Bringing Home to the Hospice
 Thank you so much...
to all the businesses and staff that have supported and continue to support Ashgate Hospicecare. As well as donations of money and time dedicated to volunteering, we’re so grateful to several companies that have funded or contributed in other
ways to huge projects at the Hospice to help make our patients and their families feel more at home whilst at the Hospice.
The Hospice was awarded ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in
2015 for our care. The improvements that we have been able to make thanks to the support we have received has meant that we now have outstanding spaces to match this care and have inspired the Hospice to continue to make improvements to other areas on the Inpatient Unit.
Dementia friendly courtyard and sun room
The first new space we opened this year was our new garden room and dementia friendly courtyard, which was only thanks to the amazing generosity of the Westfield Health Charitable Trust.

Local businesses also added to this special addition to the Hospice. Without the support of Gary Fletcher Surfacing, John Plant MBE, Tesco’s Bags of Help, K B Rouse, Peter Barber, Walton Landscapes, TG Beighton, Hospice garden volunteers, Valley Reclamation, the DEEP Group, the Hospice Dementia Champions and CMC Aluminium this project wouldn’t have been possible.
The courtyard before and after the transformation
The number of people needing hospice care is increasing as people are living longer with more complex care needs. In 2017, we joined the Derbyshire Dementia Alliance as we are committed to creating spaces that will have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of all and especially for those with dementia and other cognitive difficulties.
Westfield Health Charitable Foundation understood the Hospice’s need to create a family environment just off
the ward where people can celebrate important occasions and spend precious time together in a non-clinical environment. The new garden room provides just that and it’s
also a gateway to a welcoming outdoor space, which has
been designed to be dementia friendly. There are sensory plants, a tranquil water feature, comfortable seating and a mural (created by local artist Peter Barber) that all contribute to creating a peaceful outdoor space.
The transformed area will significantly improve the Hospice experience for all our patients and their families, particularly for those with cognitive difficulties, as well as providing families with a place to take loved ones that is easily accessible but close by to the nurses, which is important for continuity of care.
Earlier this year we opened our new car park thanks to the amazing support of Derbyshire Contracting Services Ltd.
The car park, which has created an additional 22 spaces, will now enable patients’ and their families to have accessible parking day
or night. A turning circle has also been added which will decrease congestion and ensure patients who need hospice care receive it quicker.
Matt Corbishley, Director of People and Performance at Ashgate Hospicecare, said: “As
Car Park
the number of people needing hospice care has increased,
the ability to park has become more difficult. It is important that patients who need our care receive it straight away and
that our patient’s visitors can continue to visit their loved ones at any time, day or night.”
Graham Moore, Chairman of the Westfield Health Charitable Trust, said: “As a longstanding supporter of Ashgate Hospicecare we are delighted to have funded the new courtyard and garden room, which I had the privilege of officially opening. This is an amazing space where patients and their families can spend quality time together, which I’m sure will have a positive impact on the wellbeing of patients.”
