at the New Colliery

Come along and see our Newcomen Engine in action. It's the oldest steam engine in the world that's still in its original location - the Elsecar New Colliery, sunk in 1795. Learn about the invention that changed the world and the role it played in the spectacular development of Elsecar as an industrial community. Explore inside the Engine House and peer down its original mineshaft.

Do you know a young person who loves Horrible Histories or is interested in archaeology? Come along and have fun by learning some archaeological skills or making crafty history-inspired creations, whilst finding out about different historical topics.

Suitable for children aged 8 to 16 years Please be aware this is an on-going club and not a one-off event. The club moves monthly between sites in Barnsley and Rotherham. Booking essential and must be booked by contacting GreatPlace@barnsley.gov.uk
