President, Sheffield Chamber of Commerece and MD of WorkBox UK
Iwas born and educat- edinthiscityandIam passionate to promote Sheffield as a place to develop and grow a busi- ness.
Look at the sensational things happening at the mo- ment:
The Creative Industries Quarter goes from strength to strength with more building conversions and new exciting occupiers coming to the city
The Kolider Building is open for business
One of our members, Diamond Dispersions, re- ceived the Queen’s Award for Industry for a second time last week
Sheffield’s new confer- ence venue the OEC is open at Owlerton
The Olympic Legacy Park is going from strength to strength, the Advanced Wellness Research Centre is about to open, the Centre for Food Technology is open, all showing the city as a leader in health and wellbeing
Westfield Heath is 100 years old
We watch with interest the development of the new ski village and the extreme sports facility, we hope this to be built to Olympic stand- ards so we can attract signifi- cant world class events
Sheffield has been nomi- nated for European City of The Year determined by academy of urbanism along with Porto & Utrecht
This year’s Sheffield Chamber Business Awards, above
HSBC has occupied its new office, being a signifi- cant anchor tenant in the city centre redevelopment
Our vocational education services are flourishing
The Sheffield Chamber Enterprise Academy at Shef- field College is open, which is the brainchild of our past president Steve Manley, where we are encouraging, advising and mentoring stu- dents at Sheffield College to start their own business
We are the fastest grow- ing digital cluster outside of London
We are fighting hard to get HS2 to Sheffield to ensure we remain a core city
The flood defences worked well recently, that Sheffield Chamber was in-
strumental in ensuring they were built – the city survived because of this investment. Well done to all involved!
As you can see Sheffield is changing at speed and there is a lot to shout about!
I need to say a few thank yous tonight, first of all Mr Hans Hux of B Braun who is retiring after a long service in industry and has been a great advocate of this city and is also an ex president of the chamber, enjoy your retire- ment!
Mr John Mothersole re- tires this month as chief ex- ecutive of Sheffield Council, never an easy job, but John has worked hard to do all he can for this city.
And it is with sadness that I need to announce Mr Rich-
ard Wright who most of you know has been the face of Sheffield Chamber for many many years will be stepping down at the end of January 2020.
Richard has made the chamber what it is now, he has pulled the organisation through some extremely tough times to where it is today, reporting a record surplus and totally self-suf- ficient.
Which brings me on to introducing the Chamber’s new Director of Operations, Stella Steele, Stella joined at the beginning of November and brings with her a wealth of experience from her roles with the RSPCA, Yorkshire Mediation and running her own business.
We have chosen the Chil-
President Matttttt Jackson
dren’s Hospital Charity as
our charity of the year as they had a compelling pitch of how they plan to revolu-
tionise critical care, with the building of a helipad, which will save and change lives!
Currently anyone arriving in trauma has to land at Wes- ton Park weather permitting and be wheeled to the Chil- dren’s via the road, let’s work to make this development a reality.
I would just like to say a big thank you to the Cham- ber team for organising tonight, for the last 18 years this has been Sheffield’s big- gest business event, well done!
Which leaves me to thank tonight’s sponsors with special thanks to Elevation Recruitment as headline sponsor for the last 10 years and also celebrating 10 years in business in Sheffield.
                 Sparkling welcome sponsored by DSA

Earlier this month DSA an- nounced TUI’s expansion with an extra aircraft operating from winter 2020/21. An extra 74,000 seats will be added as
a result including a new long haul route to Cape Verde.
This expansion comes af- ter TUI recent announced a fourth aircraft at DSA for summer 2020 period, adding an extra 136,000 seats, taking it to 32 destinations from DSA.
New winter destinations from DSA will now include Fuerteventura, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and the long-haul destination of Cape Verde. Additional flights to Cancun, Mexico will now take place in March and April 2020 with flights to Fuerteventura
starting earlier in February. This expansion further cements Doncaster Shef- field Airport as the home of long-haulforYorkshire,pro- viding an alternative to Man- chester Airport for Yorkshire
travellers.
Robert Hough CBE, chair-
man of Doncaster Shef- field Airport, said: “The new destinations allow more Yorkshire-based passengers to fly locally rather than hav- ing to travel over the Pen- nines on congested transport networks, currently 18,000 people per day.”
