Forgemasters
Sponsored by Hallam FM
Sheffield Forgemasters provides casting and forging solutions for the world’s most com- plex engineering challenges.
The company specialises in the design and manufacture of high integrity forgings and castings offering a ‘one-stop shop’ for steel production from a single site in the UK and often seeks contracts that carry a pre- mium value through their complexity and safety critical requirements.
Some of the largest bespoke engineered steel products in the world are produced at the Brightside Lane facility, with capacity for castings of up to 350 tonnes and forgings of up to 200 tonnes.
Sheffield Forgemasters has weathered heavy economic storms, partly resulting from the collapse of oil and gas markets in 2015, then accounting for more than 30 per cent of the company's sales, which saw key contracts cancelled.
The company quickly went from profit- ability into the red, requiring a mammoth effort to stabilise the business and set plans in motion to return to growth.
A new senior management team, lead by CEO David Bond, has reversed the for- tunes of the company, taking it from a loss of £7.6 million in 2015 to recording the com- pany's largest ever £160 million order book in 2018/2019, whilst halving its debt by £20 million. This level of change is due to a bold re-pricing strategy for products and a trans- formation programme.

S4S (UK)
Insight
S4S (UK) is an award winning dental labo- ratory, employing over 60 members of staff including dental technicians, orthodontic technicians, finance and marketing team as well as a number of apprentices.
We support the dental profession, offer- ing bespoke splints and appliances in the areas of bruxism, snoring and sleep apnoea and orthodontics including clear aligners. We also aim to increase awareness of these conditions and promote available treat- ments to patients.
In order to improve the workflow through the Laboratory, improving communication between teams - with the overall goal being to improve efficiency and customer service, we have implemented Evident, a work flow system. This system has not only improved efficiency internally but once registered, will allow our 9000 clients to access their jobs on- line through the portal. This will allow them to communicate directly with technicians regarding specific work and track the pro- gress of cases in the laboratory.
The company has invested a great deal of money, energy, and staffing into the develop- ment of our digital department. In the dental industry, Digital intra-oral / scanning and 3D printing is surging, opening up a whole new aspect of working. This strive for digital expansion has allowed the business to grow significantly, with almost 50% of work being received into the digital department com- pared with less than 5% 5 years ago.

International Trade
Loadhog
Sponsored by Pricecheck
Since 2015, returnable packaging manufac- turer Loadhog’s primary growth focus has been on implementing an export strategy to deliver a minimum sales growth of 20 per cent per annum.
Export sales have grown to £7.3m in 2018, which equates to 54 per cent of total turno- ver and we are on track to hit a record export sales of £9.3m in 2019. France and Germany have been our strongest export markets in the last three years. This has been instru- mental in deciding to invest in a local opera- tion in Obernai, France.
We sell into fast moving global supply chains where customers increasingly re- quire a returnable packaging solution. An example is taking wire harnesses for cars manufactured in Morocco direct to the as- sembly line at Jaguar Land Rover, West Mid- lands. A UK centric approach focused only on the UK logistics, is no longer viable with large tier one automotive suppliers. We are embracing the exciting export opportunity head on.
Over the last five years we have invested over £3.6m in both new manufacturing ca- pacity and tooling in gearing up for the glob- al opportunity, and our staff numbers have grown by 35 to 90 (an increase of 63 per cent) over the period 2016-2018.
Our export strategy is now primarily based on exploiting closed loop distribu- tion with returnable packaging solutions within Europe.
