Special Recognition
work-wise Foundation
Sponsored by Spaces
Work-wise was founded in 2011 as an employ- er-led initiative for engineering, manufac- turing and other related sectors.
The organisation supports the develop- ment of young people so they have the knowl- edge, skills, aptitude and opportunities for employmentwithintheSheffieldCityRegion. Through the foundation, which became a registered charity in 2014, the private sec- tor is practically and strategically taking the lead in helping to prepare young peo- ple for employment and careers. To achieve this, work-wise helps employers to estab- lish links with young people, develop strate- gies and programmes and delivers training and practical guidance to make it happen. The idea for work-wise came during the 2008 recession. John Barber, Janice Richardson and Jackie Freeborn got together and cre- ated a series of work-related programmes. Now, annually the work-wise team deliv- ers more than 10,000 work-related ex- periences for young people in the SCR through a wide variety of programmes. These include Get up to Speed (GUTS), the Summer Academy and the Better Learners, Better Workers Cutlers’ Engineering Ambas- sador Programme, to name just a few.
Now in its 10th year, GUTS attracts chil- dren, young adults, families and teachers to experience, at first hand, real opportunities and network with STEM related businesses.

Entrepreneur
Mak Tok
Sponsored by the Sheffield universities
Will Chew, founder of Mak Tok chilli pastes, won investment after singing his way to suc- cess on the BBC Dragons’ Den programme.
The £50,000 deal seen on television screens this summer was one of many high- lights for the company which has gone from strengy to strength since he set it up while studying at the University of Sheffield in 2017.
Today it employs four and after Mak Tok obtained national listing and saw an increase in sales of over 4,000 per cent.
The Chamber judges were impressed with Mak Tok’s market testing, passion for the product and the personalisation of the offer to enhance its appeal, which can eas- ily be scaled to export markets worldwide.
They believe Mak Tok to be an interna- tionally recognised ‘Brand of the Future’.
Mr Chew said the investment would be spent on increasing jar size, sell- ing tubs to restaurants and new brand- ing and manufacturing options. He also hopes to get his products on on- line supermarket Ocado and Amazon. He added: “Sara has been super helpful, very nurturing and has shown her knowl- edge. There’s now a team of professionals helping us get onto things like Amazon.” Mr Chew said he was also hoping to get Mak Tok products onto other online retailers. The name Mak Tok stands for ‘grandmother’ in Malay and was chosen to commemorate an inspiring woman.
