ACTS OF VIOLENCE/HOSTILE INTRUDER
A hostile intruder is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, hostile intruders use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.
The recommended strategy in an hostile intruder incident includes:
RUN
If it can be done in a safe manner, evacuate the facility immediately.
• Have an escape route and plan in mind.
• Help others escape, but evacuate whether or not others
agree to follow.
• Be sure you are NOT headed toward the intruder.
HIDE
If evacuation is not possible, find a secure place where the intruder is less likely to find you. Ideally, this place should: • Be out of the intruder’s view.
• Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e.,
an office with a closed and locked door).
• Not trap you or restrict your options for movement. • Allow you to quickly barricade the doors with heavy
objects.
To prevent the intruder from identifying your location, you should:
• Silence and turn off vibration of cell phone and/or other
electronic devices.
• Turn off any source of noise (i.e., radios, televisions,
computers).
• Take cover behind large items (i.e., cabinets, desks). • Remain quiet and stay calm.
• Dial 9-1-1, if you can, to alert police to the intruder’s
location.
