Cool Season Turf: Fescue and Ryegrass
• Mowing: Cool season lawns are beginning to increase activity and color. Always remember when mowing, NEVER cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade on each cutting, especially with cold winter conditions still lurking.
• Watering: If your lawn is dry, water as needed. Mother Nature usually helps us out this time of year as well. This helps to provide moisture to the root system which is still active. *DO NOT water just before a hard freeze as this can cause damage to turf by forming ice crystals on and in the plant.
• Fertilizer: Cool season grasses, such as Fescue and Ryegrass, are now getting active. Fertilizer needs to be applied for turf color and thickness. Higher Nitrogen (more of a balanced blend) fertilizer at the rate of at least .50 lb. of N per 1,000 sq. ft. is recommended. You can apply up to 1lb. of readily available nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. Add other macronutrients and micronutrients as needed based upon the soil analysis.
• Post-Emergent: Apply a Post-Emergent application for weeds that are up and active.
