Tree and Shrub Care
• Water you landscape as needed. 1” or water per week is ideal.
• Tree Trimming: This is the time of year to cut back your crepe myrtles and other trees. Be sure to cut dead limbs, limbs that curve inward, and sucker plants that are forming around the base of the tree. Cut at the crease, where limb meets the
trunk, at a 45-degree angle. Cut diseased branches. Do not leave stubs.
• Raise Canopy: Trim lower branches from your trees to allow more sunlight under your trees. Warm season grasses will thrive where there is better sunlight. This also makes mowing and trimming easier by allowing safer access underneath the
trees.
• Insect Control: Apply a Dormant Oil to control over-wintering insects on trees
and shrubs. Do not apply in freezing temperatures. Do not apply too late after the plants have flushed out.
Fertilize Your Landscape:
• Deep Root Feeding: Late January, depending on temperatures, is a great time to consider fertilizing your landscape. A deep root fertilization application is great for overall plant health and performance. Nutrients are injected in the root zone where they are needed.
• Clean-Up: February is a great month to do some clean up. Maybe a little bit in the yard but mainly in the flower bed and landscaped areas. Go ahead and clean out your beds. Rake or blow debris away from the base of the house and into the lawn. This is GREAT to do periodically. Not only does it give your landscaped beds a refurbished/fresh look, it also removes conducive conditions for insect to take up camp and reside.
• Weed Control: Hand-pull weeds that are easy to get up. If weeds are tough to remove manually, a non-selective herbicide, such as Round-Up, can be applied.
