• Fertilizer: It’s still a bit early to fertilize most warm season grasses. Depending on temperatures, some Zoysia lawns are ready for some food in the form of nitrogen since they generally green up quicker. This will encourage good turf color and density. Ammonium sulfate is a form of nitrate that is available to the plant faster than urea. This can provide an earlier green-up.
• Pre-Emergent: Apply a Pre-Emergent to prevent weeds from germinating. If a pre-emergent has yet to be applied, Crabgrass is beginning to be seen. The key to a pre-emergent is to apply it before the soil temperatures start to get in the 50’s. Crabgrass germinates at soil temps of 56 degrees. Get it down NOW. * A second, separate late application of pre-emergent can help with the germination of Goose Grass. If your lawn is prone to get Goose Grass, the second pre-emergent is recommended.
Post-Emergent: Post-Emergent applications need to be used for weeds that are up and active. Non-selective herbicides, such as Round-Up, should not be used for fear of plant injury to the transitioning warm season grass (Bermuda).
