Cool Season Turf: Fescue and Ryegrass
• Mowing: Cool season grasses, such as Fescue or Ryegrass, are active and green. Mow on a regular schedule, about every 7-10 days. Increase your mowing height every other mowing to prepare for below-freezing temperatures that are around the corner. Leave your lawn 3 1⁄2”-4” high over the Winter. The extra foliage will help insulate and protect the plant.
• Watering: Rain fall this time of the year is usually enough for our lawns, but under dry conditions water the lawn as needed. 1” of water per week is recommended.
• Fertilizer: Cool season grasses are thriving. They are ready for fertilizer. Apply a balanced blend of fertilizer, such as a 15-15-15. Apply no more than .5 lbs. of Nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. Do not fertilize with a cold snap of temperatures below freezing for several days. Weed control needs to be spot treated for active weeds. There shouldn’t be many weeds this time of year.
• Post-Emergent: Apply weed control as needed for active weeds. There shouldn’t be many weeds if you applied a pre-emergent in the last several weeks. Do not apply herbicides to a newly seeded/sodded lawn until it has been mowed a minimum of two times.
