 Cool Season Turf
• Mowing: Lawns, such as Fescue and Ryegrass, are just hanging on this time of year. Our heat and humidity are really taking a toll on this grass type. Keep mowing heights high (at least 4”) and never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade on each cutting.
• Watering: In ideal conditions, your lawn needs 2” of precipitation during the growing season per week. It is best to have less frequent, heavy soakings. This can come from rainfall or other means of irrigation. Do NOT overwater. This can be more detrimental than of lack of precipitation.
• Fertilizer: No fertilizer needs to be applied.
• Post-Emergent: Spot spray active weeds as needed with a selective herbicide.
Tree and Shrub Care
• In ideal conditions, your landscape needs 1”-2” of precipitation during the growing season per week. This can come from rainfall or other means of irrigation.
• Inspect your Landscape: Check your trees and shrubs for insect and disease activity.
• Post-Emergent: Apply a non-selective herbicide as needed as a spot spray. Avoid drift
on plants to prevent plant injury.
• Insect and Disease Application: Apply an insecticide to control insects and a fungicide
to control and prevent ornamental diseases.
AUGUST
Warm Season Turf: Bermuda and Zoysia
• Mowing: August can be tough on all grass types, even our warm season grasses. Keep your mowing heights high, above 4”. Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade on each mowing. Do not scalp the lawn. Scalping will further stress the lawn from heat or dry conditions. Stress can lead to death but, at the very least, makes the lawn more susceptible to insect and disease pressure with the weaker turf. Never cut more than 1/3 of your grass blade on each cutting.
• Watering: : In ideal conditions, your lawn needs 2” of precipitation during the growing season per week. It is best to have less frequent, heavy soakings. This can come from rainfall or other means of irrigation. Do NOT overwater. This can be more detrimental than of lack of precipitation.
• Fertilizer: Another application of higher fertilizer should be applied, assuming we are having favorable temperatures and access to irrigation if needed. Apply an application of fertilizer (up to 1 lb.) .5lbs-.75lbs of N per 1,000 sq. ft.
