In addition to last season’s schedule, the soccer complex was also home to a middle school tournament in the spring while also hosting the Dyer County Middle School Soccer team’s home games during the fall.
Though the complex was completed in the spring of 2023, the story of the soccer complex actually began 13 years before that. Ironically, the start came when Dyersburg experienced the most catastrophic flood in its history in 2010. The following year, the city was impacted by its second-highest flood stage in its history. It was because of the 2011 flood that the city qualified to compete for a grant award to improve the resiliency of the hardest hit area by the flood, Southtown.
With the support of the TNECD and countless state agencies and officials, the city of Dyersburg received a $3.5-million sewer rehab grant and a $4-million wetland and recreation grant. The soccer complex is the final piece of the latter grant.
“We want this to be something that the community is proud of but they will want to use,” Holden said. “We want to take care of our local kids through our recreation program. But, then also, we want to host tournaments – whether it

be high school or middle school events, state league level type tournaments. We’ve already been contacted by some travel teams about playing some state league games at
our facility.”
This past spring, the number of players in the youth recreational league swelled to over 300, according to Holden. The Soccer Plex also hosted four home games for the Home League Association’s soccer teams.
The facility is also in the process of upgrading its look which includes netting to keep balls from leaving the area of play.
Needless to say, the city hopes this first fall season as well as the tournaments which followed have set the foundation for big things in the world of soccer for the local community.
