High school students in accelerated coursework often experience higher levels of stress compared to students in general education,
primarily due to managing a heavy academic workload and high expectations for success. As students’ stress increases, they are at
greater risk of experiencing diminished emotional health (i.e., happiness). The presenters’ research with thousands of high school
students in accelerated curricula—Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate (AP/IB) classes—finds that academically
successful and emotionally healthy students are distinguished from struggling students based on unique characteristics, including how
they cope with academic stressors. In this session, presenters will summarize findings from their federally funded research study, which
investigated characteristics of AP/IB students who were both academically successful (e.g., high GPA, passing exam scores) and
emotionally healthy (e.g., high happiness, low school burnout and mental health problems).
